The Challenge: Dealing with Seasonal Water Fluctuations and Aesthetic Demands
A high-rise apartment project in Pohang, Gyeongsangbuk-do, South Korea, required a durable retaining wall to address site challenges while preserving panoramic views of the city, mountains, and the East Sea (Sea of Japan). An existing stream onsite posed a significant obstacle, with seasonal water fluctuations during Korea’s rainy season making a traditional MSE (mechanically stabilized earth) wall risky due to potential block instability. To ensure long-term performance, engineers sought the best retaining wall materials for Korea’s rainy season and ultimately chose Redi-Rock precast retaining walls, which can withstand fluctuating water levels in a coastal area without compromising safety or aesthetics.
Why Redi-Rock? A Durable, Engineered Solution
Leveraging the superior strength and nearly 1-ton weight for stability, the 5-meter (16.4-foot) geogrid-reinforced MSE wall was built using 41-inch (1041.4 mm) and 28-inch (711.2 mm) blocks, ensuring long-term durability in Pohang’s challenging conditions. The completed wall features:
Enhanced Stability: The wall effectively manages water infiltration, reducing the risk of soil erosion and structural damage caused by South Korea’s seasonal flooding.
Aesthetic Integration: With wet cast technology, the natural stone appearance of Redi-Rock blocks and the selection of the Ledgestone texture enhance the area's visual appeal, allowing apartment residents to continue enjoying their views uninterrupted.
Long-Term Performance: With proper drainage and robust materials, the wall provides lasting support to the infrastructure above.
